HEADIES 2019 NOMINATIONS AND PREDICTIONS

On September 21, 2019, the Nigerian music entertainment industry was shaken by the release of the nomination list for our own Grammy Awards, which is The Headies.

As we all know  The Headies nomination/award is where we know who the movers and shakers of the music industry are, who have put in a great deal of work, who has a huge fan base and who has kept it real all through the year in review (January 2018 and June 2019)

Although some folks are of the opinion that they Headies Award is not a completely honest and transparent award, judging from the Mainland and Island fracas between Mavin Records and YBNL Record Label few years ago.

Anyway, regardless of that,  some people still hold the award in high esteem and can't wait to start voting for their favs real quick.

Getting down to brass tacks, here is the list of nominations and I'd be making my predictions, I was hoping it was like Bet9JA where I can win some dough for these predictions.

Anyway,  nothing spoil. Let's get started here lovelies....

1.      BEST RECORDING OF THE YEAR

A non-voting category for the best recording (that meets the judges’ requirements of excellence; songwriting, production, rendition) by an artiste or group in the year under review.
1. Adekunle Gold – Ire
2.  Patoranking - Heal D World
3. Brymo - Olanrewaju
4.  Teni - Uyo Meyo
5. Burna Boy - Ye

PREDICTION
Personally, I'd go for Uyo Meyo because that song was legit lit. It was a song that brought tears to my eyes each time I heard it. It was a song that gave me courage and strength each time I felt tired.

So my vote is for Uyo Meyo, but I know they might give it to Burna Boy 'Ye'.

2.      BEST POP SINGLE
A category for the best pop single in year under review (by single individual or group).

1.  ‘Ye’ - Burna Boy
2.  ‘Wetin We Gain’ - Victor AD
3.  ‘Fake Love’ – Starboy ft Duncan Mighty, Wizkid
4.  ‘Case’ - Teni
5.  ‘Jealous’ – Fireboy DML
6.   ‘Baby’ - Joeboy

PREDICTION
This is a tough one. Really. Lots of my favorites are here but I'd give it to Wetin We Gain by Victor AD.  Sorry Wizzy, Teni, Joeboy and Fireboy. I love y'all but Victor gat me on this one. But I know Ye gon get it though.

Crowd mentality things sha, not about creativity or content.

3.      PRODUCER OF THE YEAR
An individual responsible for producing the most acclaimed song or album in the year under review.

1.      Phantom - ‘Ye’ b Burna Boy
2.      Ozedikus – ‘Dumebi’ by Rema
3.      Spellz – ‘Askamaya’ by Teni
4.      Killertunes – ‘Fake Love’ by Starboy ft Duncan Mighty and Wizkid
5.      Kel-P Vibes – ‘Killing Dem’ by Burna Boy ft Zlatan

PREDICTION
Let's give it to the new kid on the block... Rema. I think his producer is gon take this one. That song is a banger but I don't like it though. 🤦

4.      BEST RAP ALBUM
A non-voting category for the best album by a rap artiste or group in year under review.

1. ‘Moral Instruction’ – Falz
2.   ‘Crown’ – AQ and Loose Kaynon
3.      ‘A Study On Self Worth: Yxng Dxnzl’ – M.I Abaga
4.      ‘Clone Wars, Vol. IV (These Buhari Times)’ - Show Dem Camp

PREDICTION
I am not sure I listened to one track from MI's album, and I don't know the other people that much. So Omo Baba Falana has this one. Give it to Falz The Bahd Guy.

5.      BEST R&B/ POP ALBUM
A category for the best r&b/pop album in the year under review (by single individual or group).

1.       rare. – Odunsi (The Engine)
2.       Outside – Burna Boy
3.       No Bad Songz – Kizz Daniel
4.      Mayor of Lagos – Mayorkun
5.       About 30 - Adekunle Gold

PREDICTION
Odunsi is a legend when it comes to music and I'd have picked him, but because he is not an A list act, I can't.
So,  it's a tie between Burna Boy and Kizz Daniel but I'd pick KD because that album had four banging songs (One Ticket, Poko, Madu and No Do) and BB's album has just two that I know of oooo (Ye and Heaven's Gate).
So let the fine boy with sexy dimple have it.

6.      BEST MUSIC VIDEO

4.      ‘Talk’ (Falz) - Prodigeezy
5.      ‘Jaiye’ (Ladipoe) - 88 Factor

PREDICTION
JAIYE by Ladipoe is really dope. But because he is not an A list act, I am not sure they will give it to him. So,  let me just go for Ire by the Golden Boy, Adekunle Gold Kosoko.

3.      ‘Uyo Meyo’ – Teni
4.      ‘Wishes and Butterflies’ - Wurld
5.      ‘Gimme Love’ – Seyi Shay ft. Runtown

PREDICTION
Truthfully, I have listened to just two of the songs on this list and I am not voting for them, but based on my personal relationships with the artists' past jobs, I'd go with Booda Rainbow Hair,  Wurld.

I know Odunsi and Funbi are amazing R and B acts but I don't have 5 of their songs on my playlist like I do for Wurld.

8.      BEST COLLABO
A voting category for the best r&b, pop or hip-hop collaborative track (including cameos).

1.      ‘Like’ - Reekado Banks Ft. Tiwa Savage, Fiokee

4.      ‘Killin’ Dem' - Burna Boy Ft. Zlatan
5.      ‘Amaka’ – 2baba Ft. Peruzzi

PREDICTION
😱 The person who came up with this list can't smell heaven. Warrisdis?  I am confused myself now. Damn!!

I will have to do Eeny, meeny, miny, moe on this one. Okay,  based on viewers choice and social media wave, I'd say Amaka..

Really, everyone loved Amaka and we couldn't get the concept out of our social media jargon for a long time.

4.      ‘Sacrifice’ - Payper Corleone Ft. Alpha Ojini
5.      ‘Gang Gang’ – AQ and Loose Kaynon

PREDICTION
I am not a rap person, y'all have to pardon me on this one.
But I'd still go for Talk by Falz. (#Whispers Shiiiiii, That's the only song I know on that list)

10.  BEST VOCAL PERFORMANCE(MALE)
A non-voting category for the single male artiste with the most outstanding vocal performance on a single song or album.

1.      Tay Iwar – ‘Utero’

3.      Nonso Bassey – ‘411’
4.      Funbi – ‘Serenade’
5.      Wurld - ‘Wishes & Butterfly’

PREDICTION
411 has it for me..  This song is lit, Nonso Bassey's voice came out so strong in this one. Sorry, Johnny Drille, you are still my person.

PREDICTION
Uyo Meyo of course. Waje's voice didn't really come out that strong in Udue.

This category is a voting category for the most promising act in the year under review.

1.      Rema
2.      Joeboy
3.      Fireboy DML
4.      Victor AD
5.      Lyta
6.      Zlatan

PREDICTION
First and foremost, Zlatan has passed the level of Next Rated, so I am taking him off the list.

So we are left with four nominees, and for me it's a suit and tie between Joeboy and Fireboy.

Based on hit songs, I am giving it to Fireboy. He has three hit songs that I know of (What if I say, Jealous and Fire Down (my fav). 🎶 Baby, fire down, fire down, ko si shoro baby fire down eh eh 🎶
Joeboy has just Baby and Beginning, in my opinion oooo.

13.  HIP HOP WORLD REVELATION
A voting category for the best new artiste with a debut album adjudged to be outstanding in terms of artistic quality and impact within the year under review.

1.      Odunsi
2.      Mayorkun

PREDICTION
Wurld is the new revelation. Odunsi has been here since forever (I have heard his songs since like three to four years back) , same for the Mayor of Casterbridge, sorry, of Lagos (He was signed to DMW since 2017 na). Humblesmith should take several seats mbok.

PREDICTION
Here, I'd pass abeg.  I know only one person on that list.  Yeah,  you guessed right... YCEE and I still didn't listen to that song,  so count me out.

15.  BEST STREET-HOP ARTISTE
A voting category for the artiste whose songs are inspired by the streets. Such song should captain lingua, which may also be originated by the artiste and popular on the street.

3.      Zlatan – ‘Leg Work’
4.      Barry Jhay – ‘Aiye’
5.      Lyta – ‘Time’

PREDICTION
AIYE is lit. It is a popular song but not a street song. We all know the songs that are street songs, Awon "legbegbe, gbe body e, ji masun, leg work etc.
So,  I'd go for either Ebuka, sorry Able God 😂 (I still don't know how Toke came about her own Ebuka from Able God; and Leg Work.

King Of Swazi chooses Wife, Publicly Test Girls' Virginity As They Dance Naked. (Photos)

A common tradition in Swaziland (Swazi) permits the King, Mswati, to choose a new bride every year. This is done in a festival named Swazi Reed Dance Festival where girls are paraded and tested publicly to know their virginity status. It has been a long time tradition in Swaziland and not the first time this controversial issue is making it into the news. Although, many consider this barbaric and backward, it’s a tradition the people willingly embrace as the aim is to help King Mswati choose a wife. As part of Swazi custom and norms, that time of the year has come, when the King chooses his bride and again, he has reportedly tested some of the volunteered girls’ virginity before choosing a wife for himself. Thousands of pretty virgins’ were seen in this year’s edition dancing topless for King Mswati III, on what is called the Reed Dance ceremony, also known as Umhlanga), hoping to be his next wife. The Reed Dance ceremony is an annual Swazi and Zulu tradition hel...

Ijakumo Movie Review

Whatever this movie was set to give, it didn't give.  Even the stripping is not giving. Why is the Sharon girl sex talking like she is doing spoken words???  I liked the babe in "Listening Ears", but I feel she is not 'mature' enough theatrically for this role. Wait, what I noticed was that Toyin and her crew didn't know there was a girl who looks like the Sharon girl in his church. A very crazy error that no director should make. If they had come in with this, maybe the finding out they were twin bla BLA BLA suspense would suspense well. But as the director or script writer were very myopic, the twin shii didn't hold water. If they had said or showed that they picked the Ugandan girl because she looked like the Nigerian girl in his church, e for make perfect sense. Seriously, I am miffed. The only thing that thrilled me was Kunle Remi and his lines. O mard gan. 🤣🤣🤣 "Emi mimo ni kin gbenu sohun". 🤣🤣🤣 "So, idi Uganda lo Fe baye mi j...

Sista Movie Review

The opening scene did me in. I read somewhere that the first few 5 minutes of a movie determines if it is worth it.  Trust me, Sista movie hooked me in less than 5 minutes. I loved the straight to the point opening. No show of the Third Mainland Bridge. No lazy show of Lagos traffic. Nothing. Also, the past/present sequence made crazy sense.  Seeing Kehinde Bankole in that role is refreshing, it's not what she is used to, but she did well. Chimezie was quite not in character, or maybe he didn't bond with Ade Herself. I don't know. He is better than what I saw him act here. As usual Aunty Ronke Oshodi Oke gave it her all. This Tope Owokoniran babe tried with her Hausa accent. I love it!!! I think this is the best of her I have seen so far. I'd say this is a movie Aunty Biodun Stephen put her everything to make. This is a beautiful work of art. I love every piece of it. The story line is dope. Directing is flawless. The fun part was that even though It was predictable f...
