Authorities in Spain want Argentina and Barcelona star Lionel Messi to serve nearly two years in jail.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner will appear in court on June 2 over tax fraud allegations . Lionel Messi and his father Jorge, have been charged with three counts of tax fraud up to €4.1million. According to EFE , the Spanish agency, Messi will testify on Thursday.
Messi reportedly tried to avoid trial on grounds that his father handled his tax payments. However, a state attorney ordered both of them to appear.
Argentina national football team will have their captain in court, three days before Copa America match against Chile on June 6.
The player has claimed he did not read critical documents before signing them as he prepares to face court over tax evasion and the state are asking that both father and son serve nearly two years in prison.
Although, the public prosecutor Raquel Amado is not prosecuting Leo Messi, just Jorge, but the defence is pushing for both to be acquitted.
