Every last Saturday of each month is dedicated to a mandatory clean up of Lagos; the nation’ s commercial capital and wannabe mega city .
Shops and businesses are often shuttered from 7 am to 10 am and vehicular movement ceases for the period .
Not any more, says Lagos governor Akinwunmi Ambode .
A statement made available by the state Commissioner for the Environment , Babatunde Adejare , during the ministry ’s monthly media chat in Lagos on Thursday , has said the monthly exercise will be jettisoned because of its cost to the state ’s economy .
The commissioner disclosed that the state governor Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode has decided that the state cannot afford to shut down a mega city like Lagos for a period of 3 hours.
Mr. Adejare noted that environmental sanitation should rather be a daily exercise and charged residents to make it a way of life .
The commissioner also vowed that the state will shut down markets violating the state ’ s environmental laws .
